Basic SEO Fundamentals
Ok, so what are some basic SEO fundamentals?
First, you need to know what people are searching for when it comes to your product, industry, or service.
Are they searching for specific search terms or are they more likely to use a keyphrase?
Maybe they are searching by asking questions that they are seeking the answer to. Any of these are possible depending on the industry you are in.
*Take advantage of free resources that are available to you. Google adwords can help with finding more niche keywords and keyphrases for your industry. You can also use Google’s tools for determining monthly search volumes for specific keywords and keyphrases.*
Start with a good long list of keywords and keyphrases (we will call these tags from now on) that you want to be found for. If your target market is local to your area, then you will want to include the cities that your business services into that list.
Now that you have a good list of tags, pick out 3-5 that are your base tags. These are a few that you will probably want somewhere on every page. The foundational pillars of your business.
Note: On any given page on your website, you will only want to be optimized for 5-10 tags at the most.
Any more than that and your page will suffer because it begins to lose focus for the search engine and your surfer.
You want your pages to be as niche specific as you can get them.
The main pages of your website should have a focus on this short list that describes your base services or products.
On your secondary pages, you will want to include some of your base tags but this is your chance to include more of the keywords from your long list.
This can include more specific key phrases or the more finer points of your business that you love to share with your prospects.
You want those pages to be about things you have been asked by prospects.
Addressing those presales questions on your website not only builds confidence with your potential client but also gives you the ability to sprinkle more of those niche specific tags around your website to boost your SEO.
This is more important than you think because maintaining relevance with the search engine is symbiotic of maintaining relevance with your prospects.
At least that is how the search engine sees it, so this is the best rule to follow.
Your site needs to be updated on a regular basis OR ELSE it will lose relevance and rank to your competitors that ARE updating their websites.
Following these basics will give your site a firm foundation to build on and the search engines will notice your efforts.
