Finding good, quality plugins & themes that are on a professional level can be hard.
Hopefully this list of criteria can help you distinguish the good, the bad, & the ugly.
One of the first things you notice when looking at the built-in search for plugins on your WordPress install is…
You better know what you’re looking for since nothing is categorized & the featured plugins are pretty much pay to play which doesn’t necessarily mean their good or even at a professional level.
So one of the first things we look at, beyond compatibility, is active installs.
How many other people are using it with success.
However, this definitely doesn’t tell the whole story so that’s just one of the first things to keep in mind when looking deeper.
The next obvious thing to look at is the reviews.
Any recent bad ones?
And do those bad reviews sound like they were written by people who could actually read the documentation?
Which leads me to the next big thing you may have to look deeper for, documentation.
Is the plugin well documented with good, easy-to-follow step by step instructions?
Customer Support… do they make themselves available to answer questions or fix issues?
Next, we dig into the features.
Does it have all the features I am looking for and expect compared to other plugins in the same class?
What is the pricing structure like for those features & how that compares to other plugins with similar features.
Another thing to look closely for is…
Does it introduce any features that you didn’t think of or know existed?
Something that makes it REALLY stand out in it’s class.
One thing to ALWAYS remember is…
Just because you may have seen it on some popular WordPress blogs, doesn’t always mean it’s the best or even all that good.
It might just mean they they have a really lucrative affiliate program.
This is just a simple list of things to look for and consider.
Of course every situation is different and new solutions hit the market and become available all of the time.
But if you start here, you can save yourself a lot of time.
